The Cadastral Survey Act 2002 came into effect on 1 June 2002.  This Act set up the appointment of a new Cadastral Surveyors Licensing Board (CSLB) and dissolved the then existing Survey Board of New Zealand that had been appointed under the Survey Act 1986.  The new Board is constituted under section 10 of the Act and is a direct successor to the Surveyors Board first constituted under the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and Board of Examiners Act 1900 that was appointed as from 1 April 1901.

The Minister for Land Information announced the appointment of the new Cadastral Surveyors Licensing Board (CSLB) with the following people being appointed for a period of three years from September 2006:
Gary Clark of Auckland,
Brian Coutts of Dunedin,
Brett Gawn of Wellington,
Jenny Kirk of Auckland, and
Marton Sinclair of Christchurch.
The Surveyor-General, Dr Don Grant is an ex officio member of the Board.
Frances Russell of Wellington and Peter Smidt of Napier were appointed as substitute members.  Brett Gawn and Marton Sinclair were appointed on the recommendation of a body representing licensed cadastral surveyors.

The functions of the Board are set out in section 11 of the Act, the primary function being the licensing of cadastral surveyors competent to conduct cadastral (land title) surveys.  The Board consequently sets standards of education and practical experience required for the licensing of surveyors.  The Board also exercises certain disciplinary powers as set out in Part 4 and Schedule 2 of the Act.

The Board administers reciprocity arrangements with the 8 Australian State and Territory Boards.   Full reciprocity between these Boards has existed since 1901.  The Council of the Reciprocating Surveyors Boards of Australia and New Zealand meets annually.

The Board also recognizes qualifications from other jurisdictions which need to be assessed and considered by the Board on a case by case basis.
